Victoria Lehmann says erectile dysfunction can indicate other problems

They only have to tell the doctor which grade they are in, with a new diagnostic tool called the Erectile Hardness Score (EHS):

• Grade One: For large but not hard penis;
• Grade Two: For hard penis but not hard enough for penetration;
• Grade Three: For penis which is hard enough for penetration but not completely hard; and,
• Grade Four: For penis which is completely hard and fully rigid.

Urologist consultant Dr Peter Ng Eng Pin said: "If the man is not in Grade Four, he should see a doctor and talk about it. With the grading system, it will be easier for the patient to explain his condition."

He said the EHS not only improved communication between the patient and doctor but was also a less embarrassing method for the patient to describe his condition.

United Kingdom sex and relationship therapist Victoria Lehmann at a media briefing yesterday said before the EHS, men with ED did not have any specific aim or level to attain.

"It is like boarding a bus without knowing the destination," she said, adding that without a goal, men with ED would probably not seek treatment.

Lehmann said ED could also be an indicator of some other health problems like diabetes and high cholesterol.

She said erection hardness strongly correlated with a man’s sexual relationship, self-esteem, confidence and overall relationship.

In a recent Pfizer Global Better Sex survey, men and women rated the importance of hardness of erections at 3.6 and 3.5 respectively (rated from 1 to 4).

The survey was participated by 12,563 men and women from 27 countries. Malaysia was represented by 253 men and women. According to the survey, 64 per cent of Malaysian men are "not very satisfied" with their erection hardness while nine per cent are "not satisfied".
