The rapidity of ejaculation in men is genetically determined. This is the result of research by Utrecht University. Neuropsychiatrist Dr Marcel Waldinger and Pharmacological Researcher Paddy Janssen studied 89 Dutch men with premature ejaculation and will publish the results this week in the renowned International scientific journal the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

The participants in the study by Waldinger and Janssen were 89 Dutch men who suffer from the primary form of premature ejaculation, in other words, men who always had this problem. A control group of 92 men was also studied. For a month the female partners used a stopwatch at home to measure the time until ejaculation each time they had intercourse. 'This study applies to men who have always ejaculated prematurely from their first sexual contact onwards and not for men who started suffering from this later on in life,' Waldinger emphasises.

Serotonin deficiency
In men who suffer from premature ejaculation, the substance serotonin appears to be less active between the nerves in the section of the brain that controls the ejaculation. Among other things, this substance is linked to sexual activity and appetite. It is a substance that transfers a signal from one neuron to another. Due to the low activity of serotonin, this signal transfer does not occur properly in men with the primary form of premature ejaculation.

Gene responsible
A gene which had already been discovered, namely 5-HTTLPR, appears to be responsible for the amount and activity of serotonin, which means that it controls the rapidity of ejaculation. Three types of the gene exist: LL, SL and SS. The study showed that the LL type causes a more rapid ejaculation. On average, men with LL ejaculate twice as quickly as men with SS, and also almost twice as quickly as men with SL. The researchers are currently also looking for other genes that are involved in ejaculation.

Not psychological
As long ago as 1998, researcher Marcel Waldinger predicted that both the rapidity with which men ejaculate and the primary form of premature ejaculation were genetically determined. 'This theory contradicts the idea, which has been common for years, that the primary form of premature ejaculation is a psychological disorder,' explains Waldinger. 'The results of our research confirm the genetic theory and may contribute to possible gene therapy against premature ejaculation.'

Its about cheating and gene relation.

HE CHEATS, she cheats. So, what’s new, right? After all, men and women have had adulterous affairs since time immemorial.

From plebs to famous celebrities, church stalwarts to the office janitor - it transcends economic status, culture, race, religion and age €“ no one is too virtuous to be tempted by a member of the opposite sex.

In fact, the Bible says that whosoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her in his heart. In Islam, adultery is a sin punishable by death. Other religions like Buddhism and Hinduism also strongly discourage adultery.

So if it’s not condoned by religion, and most will agree it’s morally wrong, why then be unfaithful?

There was an interesting observation by a blogger named Lilian who wrote: “If you don’t feed your man well at home, he will need to eat outside.”

It’s such a Chinese imagery to associate everything with food. Heck, what does it take to make a guy realise that he’s got a good thing going at home short of physically tying him to a tree? Surely modern wives today will attest to the fact that their straying men are often more than “well-fed”!
One-time US presidential candidate John Edwards (right) confessed on ABC News to an extra-marital affair with actres s Rielle Hunter. His wife reacted by saying that their marriage would survive.

But here’s the mother of all excuses: Scientists have found another reason why men commit adultery and it’s backed by scientific evidence.

According to a recent report, a new discovery has linked a man’s philandering to a gene in his DNA.

Conducted by Swedish researchers, the study looked at 550 twins and their partners who had been together for five or more years. The men who carried one or two copies of a gene variant called “allele 334” were twice as likely to have had problems with their wives or in making commitments in relationships in the past year than those who do not have it.

The gene variant, which is present in four out of 10 Swedish men, can explain why some men are more prone to stormy relationships and bond less with their wives or girlfriends, a team of researchers at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute said.

Happiness with partners of those with and without the variant were consistent with the findings: men were more likely to be devoted and loyal husbands when they lacked the gene variant.

“The incidence of allele 334 was statistically linked to how strong a bond a man felt he had with his partner,” lead researcher Hasse Walum said.

Men with two copies of the allele had twice the risk of experiencing marital dysfunction, with the threat of divorce within the last year, compared to men carrying one or no copies.

He stressed, however, that the effect of the genetic variation was relatively modest and could not be used to predict with any accuracy how someone would behave in a future relationship.

The results, published in the US scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, are “original findings which shed light on the fact that all of our behaviours are influenced by both nature and nurture,” said Martin Ingvar, professor of neurophysiology at Karolinska Institute.

“Even complex, cultural social phenomena such as marriage are influenced by a person’s genetic make-up,” he said.

The gene in question controls the production of a molecule receptor for vasopressin, a hormone that is found in most mammals. The same gene has previously been linked to monogamous behaviour in male voles, a mouse-like rodent.

That’s not to suggest that adulterous husbands are rats (though some wives may beg to differ) but obviously, we still share many traits with the animal kingdom.

Interestingly, some species of birds like the pigeon, for example, is mostly monogamous and will pine to death for the lost partner. On the other hand, the Fairy Wren is socially monogamous yet sexually promiscuous. The male bird prides itself on running a harem of females, and the female will sometimes bring up offspring from another pairing (chicks from its male partner but not her own).

Naturally, the “cheating gene” study has sparked off a debate worldwide about whether people should conduct genetic screening before marriage. Just imagine: women no longer need to waste time and energy on dating games to find Mr Right because DNA tests will prove outright that he’s Mr Wrong!

Some men may defend themselves by saying the fault is not entirely theirs if they are compelled to seek entertainment outside the confines of marriage.

Well, let’s face it, some men, say the experts, despite being married to good-looking, intelligent women who seem to supply their every emotional, mental and sexual need, still find time for an affair, genetic make-up not withstanding. Simply because they can.
